In the Gorean society in the books, owning a slave was sanctioned by the law. A slave didn’t have to ”want“ to be a slave, she didn’t have to want to be owned, and she didn’t ”have“ to find her slave heart, her submission or her desire to serve... However, the men spent months training a slave, helping her discover a side of themselves that they may not have known existed, and taught them to embrace it openly, and without reservation. It wasn’t necessary, but they must have enjoyed teaching them what being a female slave meant.

If a slave acknowledges her desire to serve, her desire to submit and be dominated by a man, she grows and becomes a better slave. If a slave does things by force, her service will not be as good as if she wants to serve her Master, and has a need to be pleasing to him, a need that comes from wanting to please him and be seen as a good girl...

A Gorean Free Man often wants his slave to love him, so their service and slavery takes on a deeper meaning, to the point where a slave would rather beg to stay in his collar than beg for freedom, that the happiest place she has, is in a collar at his feed. They felt love so deeply for their Owner’s that they didn’t wish to be free, or sold, or even run away where another might capture them that they wouldn’t love the way they did their Master.

Slaves were taught to respect the hierarchy of slaves above them, of free men and free women. Anything they did that displeased anyone above them might result in punishment. Over time, the reinforcement of respect for this system often brought them to a deeper understanding of themselves, and to grow to respect the strength and intelligence of their Masters and those above them.

They may even eventually feel that free woman should all be in a collar, and resent them for their position. The resentment of free women often make being free seem so horrible that they’d rather be a slave, at least then they don’t need forced modesty, to hide their true feeling, to pretend to be cold and bitter, and a non-sexual creature. To be free once you’ve experience slavery often makes a slave realize how being a slave is so amazing. They are required to have no secrets, to be everything they are, vulnerable, female, vibrant, alive, and at the feet of a man.

The Free often used collaring, branding, speech patterns, restrictions on eye contact, serving, and many other tools to reinforce their psychological slavery and the roles of Master and slave. A Gorean Free was often incredibly patient, often spending months training a girl and slowly bringing her around to his way of thinking, giving her no chance except to be open to him in all ways, all her desires and dreams were expected to be laid at his feet. He would often wait for months for her to crawl to his feet and beg to please him, to serve him, to be used sexually for his pleasure...

Denying her all the pleasures that another girl might get who’s already embraced her servitude and slavery with an open mind. They wanted them sexual, they’d often initiate their sexual desires, teach them what orgasms felt like, what a tender and loving touch is, what a man was and what they could give a beautiful woman... then take it away and wait until she came to the conclusions on her own that she wanted what he could give her and she’d give him all of herself with no reservations in return for this.

Helping a girl discover her need to serve and be pleasing helps them do a better job. In the real world it is impossible to enslave a girl against her consent, but many of the same theories on training still can apply to modern day world on training. If a slave accepts this part of herself, she will seek it out on her own, searching for a man she knows can offer this kind of a life to her, and wants her at his feet as much as she wants to be there.

On earth, a slave can leave, legally there’s no binding contract that can keep her in an unhappy situation... but if she’s treated well, enslaved, emotionally and psychologically, trained and conditioned, given the things she needs to be fulfilled as a slave, why would she want to leave? Knowing they are a slave inside makes it so much easier to accept that role in their life, and to embrace it... Being free is not what they would want. Training a slave is difficult, it takes active work on both parties since there’s no legal binding way to keep a slave in a place they don’t want to be.

On earth, a Master would lose his slave if he were to completely abuse or neglect her; she won’t serve him as well and eventually would probably leave if he never pays any attention to her. A smart Master will train his girl well and put in the energy and effort it takes to make her want to beg to be at his feet and serve him with no reservations. It is a lot of work on the Master’s side, not just the slaves.

Given enough time in a solid dynamic, with clearly defined roles and psychological enslavement over time from the Master, a slave will truly believe she is unable to leave, or fathom any other existence besides being a slave. Why would she WANT to go back to being a frigid, cold woman when she can accept herself, and is accepted for herself, totally open and feminine to a man...?
